What We Do: the Lincoln Families West Oakland Initiative (WOI) program is a culturally responsive academic intervention and wellness program that integrates in-class supports, social-emotional learning, parent engagement, and case management. To address educational equity among students attending West Oakland public schools and provide responsive supports in partnership with schools and the community, our staff deliver programming in a variety of ways:
- Family Coaching – Providing supports for families to connect to their communities and develop skills and resources for self-sufficiency;
- Student Services – Working with students to build social emotional skills and positive school behaviors;
- Educational Supports – Providing classroom learning supports and academic enrichment, including culturally relevant books, school supplies, holiday/cultural celebrations, and recreational field trips, as well as helping school systems be more inclusive and responsive to students.
Our Why: In 2013, Lincoln Families made the intentional decision to relocate our headquarters back to West Oakland, the community of our roots. We immediately launched our West Oakland Initiative program to bring supports and resources to youth and families, and embed ourselves in the community. Over the years, we have partnered with schools to respond to the need for academic improvement, and to provide supports for students to engage and achieve. Our in-class services, family engagement, and school-wide supports are pivotal in helping students and their families address barriers, succeed, and thrive.
POSITION SUMMARY: Reporting to the WOI Program Manager, the Intervention Specialist (IS) is responsible for improving the well-being of West Oakland scholars by implementing high quality, comprehensive, strengths-based and individualized interventions according to the set goals of the scholar’s Social Emotional Wellness Plan. The IS collaborates with families, OUSD, and institutional partners to significantly increase Social Emotional awareness, improve academic reading level, and significantly decrease disciplinary infractions. The IS monitors all data to determine the effectiveness of the program and completes assigned documentation consistent with program guidelines.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Recruit, enroll and support scholars and families in need to Social Emotional development in West Oakland public schools; this includes providing individualized interventions, case management and systems coordination to achieve three primary outcomes in the areas of attendance, reading and social-emotional growth.
- Develop relationships and ongoing communication with teachers and other school-based staff.
- Work with parents, caregivers, scholars and school staff to create Social Emotional Wellness Plans for scholars and track progress.
- Support scholars and teachers with the implementation of action steps to meet outcomes of goals set in Social Emotional Wellness Plans.
- Provide up to two hours of 1:1 SEL (Social Emotional Learning) sessions per week to scholars, based on individual need and goals, for assigned caseload.
- Maintain all appropriate records including the completion and submission of client progress notes.
- Track family and school data as well as gathering academic and discipline reports of scholars.
- Administer the Basic Reading Inventory (BRI) assessments to scholars as needed—generally at beginning and end of school year as pre- and post-program measures.
- Host weekly Social Emotional Wellness groups with scholars.
- Help coordinate and/or facilitate parent empowerment meetings.
- Connect families to resources that address barriers that may be hindering their children’s academic and/or Social Emotional Wellness progress (e.g., health center, food bank, social services).
- Coordinate and support in and out of school enrichment opportunities for scholars and their families; this includes facilitating quarterly Drop Everything and Reset (DEAR) week sessions.
- Attend school and community partner meetings including COST, SST, OFCY, YFO, etc.
- Transition to assigned Oakland Freedom School (OFS) position during summer programming and assist Lincoln deliver a high-quality program for scholars.
- Driving may include, but is not limited to, IS taking clients on outgoings or doing home visits, and transporting materials between sites during summer program (IS position requires a valid CA driver’s license, satisfactory driving record and personal automobile insurance).
POSITION REQUIREMENTS: A positive, service-oriented team player who thrives in a fast-paced, busy environment. Must have strong organizational and time management skills to handle competing priorities. Excellent interpersonal and communication (oral and written) skills with the ability to resolve conflict and build relationships with all stakeholders. Strong leadership skills as well as the ability to work in a cooperative management environment. Demonstrated awareness of, sensitivity to and competence in dealing with cultural and socioeconomic diversity of client population. Must be reliable, personable, and able to maintain professional boundaries as well as a high level of confidentiality. Can work independently, collaborate with others, and ask for help when necessary. Proven ability to identify issues and create solutions using presentation, technical and business documentation skills. Must have working knowledge of community resources, proven problem-solving skills and a commitment to working with youth and families.
EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION:
- Bachelor’s degree in Social Work, Counseling, Psychology, Public Administration, Education or related field preferred
- High school diploma or equivalent required
- At least 2 years of work experience in school-based services required
- Previous work experience in West Oakland community preferred
- Previous work experience with trauma-informed care and practices a plus
- Non-profit and/or healthcare experience desirable
- Strong computer skills required with proficiency in Microsoft programs and Google suite preferred

- Bilingual Skills: Up to an additional $2.50 per hour (contingent upon results of language proficiency test)

Employees who have been at Lincoln Families for one year are also eligible to participate in advanced training series.
